Nanjo, located in the southern region of the main island of Okinawa, is a destination bursting with history, legends and spirituality.
"Discover the Island’s Umui" explores destinations of spiritual significance that are integral to the island's history and empowers participants to channel Okinawa’s wellness philosophies by incorporating mediation at a number of the island’s most sacred sites. While visiting each site, your guide will draw physical and emotional connections between the island’s origin story and your own, with particular attention to the three stages of life: past, present, future. In doing so, you will achieve new mindfulness skills that allow you to reflect on the past, appreciate the present and visualize your hopes for the future.
The program begins with a walk on the serene Hyakuna Beach, said to be where Amami Kiyo, the creation goddess of the Okinawan islands, first arrived on the main island of Okinawa according to ancient Ryukyu mythology. Here, you will meditate on the white sand and reflect upon your “past” life under the guidance of a spiritual leader, as well as explore Yahara Zukasa, a place of worship that stands in the sea. Next, you will travel to Kakinohana Hija, a local spring recognized as one of the finest bodies of water to visit in Japan due to its water clarity, cultural significance and appreciation and contribution to water conservation.
Honoring your “current” life, you will be cleansed with the pure spring water before spending time at Tamagusuku Gusuku, the oldest castle in Okinawa and the final place of spiritual pilgrimage for locals during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Here, you will begin to create your “future” life.
The program also includes a visit to Seifa Utaki, considered to be one of the most sacred sites of the Ryukyu Kingdom era and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will give thanks for the natural beauty of the surrounding grove and islands.
The experience includes lunch at “BE NATURAL,” a beloved Italian restaurant where dishes are made using locally sourced and ingredients, such as fish caught at the nearby port and vegetables grown in the island’s fields, as well as dinner at the acclaimed “Yui,” where you will enjoy raw foods to enhance and support your physical wellbeing and learn about popular Okinawan cooking methods.
Your final dining experience will be evening tea at a traditional old folk house cafe, "Tojidokoro Fuan.” Here, shell ginger tea, coffee and sweets are served on Yachimun (Okinawan pottery), crafted by famous potter, Jissei Omine of the eponymous studio Omine Kobo.Price JPY 105,700 per participant

Discover the Island’s Mabui (Soul)
Okinawa has long been recognized as the birthplace of karate, with the origins of the martial art dating back to the early days of the Ryukyu Kingdom, an era known for its unwavering dedication to peace. This specialized form of self-defense utilizes unique techniques and pattern-based movements to teach mindfulness, strength and self-protection. In "Discover the Island’s Mabui,” you will take lessons with Mr. Ippei Yagi, a master of Goju-ryu, a traditional Okinawan style of karate. After donning a traditional karate uniform, you will explore the origins and evolution of karate as a martial art through introductory movements and specialized breathing techniques. In addition to learning the technical aspects of the sport, this unique wellness experience is designed to strengthen the connection between the mind and body and impart a sense of peace and mindfulness. Whether a beginner or a karate master, you will walk away with a better understanding of Okinawa’s history and how to implement the practice into everyday life.
